The Hawaii Gateway Energy Center received the 2005 Honolulu AIA* Award for Excellence.
It is one of the only eight projects worldwide to be LEED-NC** (New Construction) platinum-certified by the United States Green Building Council.
The landmark complex of buildings, located at the entrance to NELHA, is a postive-net energy facility. The two main buildings, about 3,500 sq. ft., deomonstrate various renewable energy systems that offer models for the future. Among the Gateway highlights:
- Zero-Net-energy (produces more than it consumes)
- Photovoltaic energy production.
- Deep, cold seawater used for space cooling, condensation irrigation, fresh water production and in-slab radiant cooling.
- Hydrogen fuel cell energy production (future). The Completed Phase 1 house administration, conference and education rooms and a research laboratory complex.
