Results of the 2011 Shell EcoMarathon international car race in Houston,TX

The Purdue Solar Racing team will soon have a street legal solar car that can get about 2200 miles per gallon. Its solar-powered urban commuter car achieved the equivalent of almost 2,200 mi/gal (64.5 mi/kWh) in the 2011 Shell EcoMarathon international competition this week in Houston. The car, equipped with five onboard computer systems, generated so much electricity it was in jeopardy of overloading its onboard batteries. Subsequent versions of the car may include an air-conditioning unit to make it even more comfortable and to consume excess electricity. The team is applying for a VIN number and license plate to make it a street-legal experimental vehicle. The team is drawn from an array of undergraduate programs including mechanical, electrical and computer engineering and aviation technology. It spent one year designing the $90,000 prototype and one year building it.  For more race results click |here|.

It has been several weeks since the Geothermal Working Group submitted their preliminary report to the 2011 State Legislature. It has also been weeks since the co-chair of that effort, Hamakua farmer Richard Ha, made public his well-received goal of buying  HELCO, the island’s power company, along with some partners. At this month's regular Kona Town Meeting on Tuesday night, February 8th, residents got the chance to hear the details about both of these developments, first hand.
